The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in utilizing replay technology.
Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes are granted the right to challenge specific decisions made by the official, following the system already in operation at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the official to re-examine specific situations, such as:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.
A Recent Example
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player conceded it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Broader Adoption
This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at every one of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
