A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual weight regain—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated rebound.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often life-long.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of cravings.
"It was like something flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not established lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Survey data show that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural changes.
