Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of horror films: Sit down with your loved one and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. Outwardly, it could look like typical biological terror, but beneath Together lies a profound examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have been together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a long-term relationship.

The narrative begins when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s largely where the cliches end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While walking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a strange force takes hold of the pair. This force induces a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, blending elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) physical transformations, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts seamlessly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A large part of Together is only the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate countless layers to the characters’ relationship. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions slowly bubbles to the surface.

In contrast, Tim's character feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve left the city and far away from his network of friends. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

The couple grapple with the type of challenges that come with any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their relationship.

Thematic Depth

While the otherworldly presence in Together represent these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a brilliant analogue to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s conclusion, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Reports indicate that single viewers have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, some couples experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your partner and say, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake today.
