In a significant move ahead of the upcoming general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the removal of the sitting government.
A Pledge to Address Young People's Demands
Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have publicly pledged to focus on the grievances raised by the younger generation. This commitment comes after the turbulent anti-graft protests that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.
"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.
The late summer uprising was sparked by widespread frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident acted as a catalyst for underlying resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic graft in politics.
Details of the Fresh Electoral Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Wider Government Consultations Underway
In a related event, the sitting interim prime minister recently conducted meetings with several leading political leaders. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.
After these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and open atmosphere for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
