Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, you'll find a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the hearts of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to have a chance for representation, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated completely that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles stand as the most-played games worldwide continuing this trend for over a decade.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational to the art of video games, while interacting across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like film action specialists, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
