No fewer than 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a route developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the national leader.

The leader announced that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This venture was intimately linked to his leadership's economic goals for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The construction of both rail lines was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an previous collision this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the chief of a key rival party called for an immediate halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these national initiatives.
